Working in NEC Hazardous Locations

To ensure that your workplace remains safe when using electrical equipment in potentially hazardous environments, we offer a range of systems that adhere to the National Electric Code (NEC). These ATEX systems are safe to use in areas where fire or explosion risk may be present due to flammable gasses or flammable liquids.

The Importance of NEC

The National Electric Code is a set of classifications for hazardous working environments where there is risk of combustion or explosions. This could be due to the presence of flammable gasses, dust or fibers in the air. Care must therefore be taken when using electrical equipment as hot equipment or sparks can ignite, which can be devastating for your business and staff. Remember; it is your duty as a business owner to ensure your workplace is safe for everyone at all times.

Types of NEC Hazardous Locations

NEC hazardous locations are split into 3 categories; class 1, class 2 and class 3 hazardous locations:

  • Class I – Locations that feature levels of flammable gas or vapor in sufficient quantities to be flammable or ignitable.
  • Class II – Locations that feature sufficient quantities of flammable dust in the air that are explosive or combustible.
  • Class III – Locations that feature easily ignitable fibers or flyings due to the nature of the materials being handled, stored or processed.

Divisions of NEC Hazardous Locations

Class 1, class 2 and class 3 hazardous locations are further divided in two divisions spending on the level of risk:

  • Division 1 – The most hazardous level. Division 1 refers to an environment where flammable gasses, vapors, combustible dust or ignitable fibers or flyings are present continuously or frequently.
  • Division 2 – The least hazardous level. Division 2 refers to an environment that only occasionally features flammable gasses, vapors, combustible dust or ignitable fibers or flyings.
